The First Winery

The history of Bodegas Barbadillo begins in the 19th century when Benigno Barbadillo y Hortigüela, alongside his cousin Manuel López Barbadillo, settled in Sanlúcar de Barrameda after making a fortune in Mexico. In 1821, they acquired their first winery, named "El Toro."

Benigno passed away in 1837, but by then, his legacy and the brand’s potential were unstoppable. His eldest son, Manuel, took over the business, and in 1954, his grandson, Antonio Barbadillo Ambrossy, formally established the company now known as Bodegas Barbadillo.

The First White Wine from the Marco de Jerez

Castillo de San Diego was the dream of one man, Toto Barbadillo. His story begins long before the wine was created. In the late 1960s, Antonio Pedro Barbadillo Romero (Toto) discovered white wines abroad that, with their smoother and fruitier taste, paired perfectly with fish and seafood. Upon returning, he decided to experiment until he finally created the wine he had always wanted, which they called “table white wine.” In 1975, the first edition of this pioneering wine, opening a new category, was launched, and it became known as Barbadillo.

The First Manzanilla EN RAMA

Manzanilla Solear en Rama, an unfiltered seasonal release, was launched. It is bottled without filtration and made in four seasonal saca releases each year, each with its unique nuances and organoleptic characteristics: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

Barbadillo joined the shareholding of Vega Real, a boutique winery located in Castrillo de Duero, by a meander of the Duero River.

Gibalbín, the First Red Wine from Andalusia

Gibalbín is the first large-scale red wine project in Andalusia, giving credibility to red wine production in a region traditionally known for whites. Today, Barbadillo is a pioneer in the revival of the Tintilla de Rota variety, a native grape that was nearly extinct and was rescued for this project.

And It Joined the Mountains

Somontano is a geographical area in the north of Huesca, pre-Pyrenean, protected by mountains, with its central hub being the city of Barbastro. It is an excellent land for vine cultivation. When phylloxera ravaged France in the late 19th century, some French winemakers looked to this area to produce wine, and one of them, Francisco Lalanne, even settled there and founded a winery that still stands today. In the 1960s, with the cooperative movement, small viticulturists in the area formed the Cooperativa del Somontano del Sobrarbe, which would eventually become Bodegas Pirineos. In 2007, it became part of Barbadillo.

A Bottle of Poetry: "Barbadillo Versos 1891"

An exceptional and unique Amontillado from a single cask dedicated to Manuel Barbadillo in 1891, poet and friend of many writers from the Generation of '27, such as Manuel Machado, who wrote the preface to some of his books. Versos 1891, which was already referred to in the 19th century as "old Amontillado," started as a baptismal gift to Manuel Barbadillo from his father. A century later, it was still aging in Barbadillo’s cellars in Sanlúcar. Only 100 bottles of this historic Amontillado were released to the market at a price of €10,000 each.
